Broker of the month: ETX Capital, read our expert and client reviews here
The UK firm of TD Direct Investing started up in 1997 with the name of Green Line Investor Services (UK) Limited. They changed their name in the first few months of business to TD Waterhouse Investor Services, (TD Waterhouse was the UK’s leading execution-only brokers), and again in 2011 to TD Direct Investing (Europe) Ltd. Most years since then, they have acquired other companies until they built up the conglomerate it is today.
The Group Head for Wealth Management, Insurance, and Corporate Shared Services for this UK spread betting broker is Mike Pederson and Richard Whitham is the White Label Manager at TD Direct Investing (Europe).
TD has a web-based online platform and another downloadable one, called a ‘professional platform’ which lets you trade CFDs, Forex and Futures from the one platform.
Their spread betting platform, however, is described as, ‘The TD Financial Spread Trading platform is designed with the active trader in mind. You can access information to help you make your own decisions, and trade long or short, all from one platform.‘ That is all very well, but as accessing information is a pretty integral part of trading, something more explicit about what the platform is would have been welcome. (It is actually the same one as City Index. ) Following the same principle of little information, a demo account is available ‘until you are ready’, which seems to mean you can use it as long as you wish. This seems strange and you would assume there is a time limit, but perhaps you really can use this indefinitely. You also get access to a wide range of products, which again is a normal part of trading for financial spread betting brokers.
UK stocks, international stocks, funds, bonds and gilts, investment trusts, ETPs, REITs, CFDs, forex, futures and warrents are the markets TD Direct Investment offer.
TD Direct Investing do a host of activities and if you are looking for financial spread betting you will find it under the slightly more elegant, but less common name of ‘Financial Spread Trading’.
Their ‘training or education’ part is rather small and inadequate. For example they explain to a beginner what leverage is by saying ‘Financial spread trading is a margin product’, but there is no explanation of what margin is.
Compared to just about every other financial spread betting broker the information and education on spread betting is poor and extremely limited.
TD Direct Investing offer the choice of three currencies for spread trading, thus avoiding costly currency exchanges, and this has a distinct advantage over FXCM who only offer sterling as a working currency. Information about what their spreads are, seems to be missing, or perhaps it is well hidden.
Making a spread betting brokers comparison, there is nothing to make this company stick out.
